If Used Scourbos 9 and 4 Last Year Do Cows Need It Again

Thinking about doing a scour vaccine, is it worth it? 10$ per cow plus labour to run them through 2x. I didnt have any scour problems last year but the year before I had too many. How well does the vaccine work? Helland

Sounds like expensive. I started scour bos last year, 2 shots first year then one annual booster. Don't know if pays, but I Voight cows from many sources and never had a single case.

I want to say I pay 3.6 per dose for booster and 2 something for the first year second shot.

I have seen scouring calves (not mine) and the wreck that follows and will NOT take that chance here!

We boosted heifers three weeks ago and did cows on Tuesday. Heifer calving will/could start today.

we do the calf guard. mix and squirt down calf mouth. try asap but have up 12 hrs. 3.90/ dose. NorthernCattle

That's us dollars, maybe Canada has different vaccine availability

I start about 2 months before calving and feed till they go to pasture,kinda looks like and tastes like chocolate,its supposed to line the intestines so the bad microbes don't stick there,the calves will eat it also as they get older Russ In Idaho

I've never used Scour Bos, but I've used Scourguard 4 K/C from Zoetisus for close to 26 years now. It works, I've proved it to myself at the dairy here. I run a closed herd on dairy only bring in breeding bulls 2-3 three a year. If we don't vaccinate springing heifers twice before calving I can almost assure you of a 50% death loss in their calves within 14 days of birth. However those coming from heifers that have been vaccinated very seldom get sick, if they do they respond to treatment. I can take a calf that died in a hutch from a new springer that wasn't vaccinated, then throw a calf in same hutch never cleaning it from an older cow that has received two vaccinations as a heifer before calving, then a booster annually at dry off time. That calf will be fine. However throw another calf from a non-vacc heifer and same deal.

I calf beef heifers by dairy within a 1/8 of a mile of dairy they all receive vacc. twice before calving. Then all other beef cows that come close to dairy( 1 mile away) at calving time are given a booster of Scourguard once a year. Remaining beef cows are calved on desert country with wide open space, they never receive vaccine again.

If you calve in the same facilities year after year I would be giving some type of scour protection. I had good luck with Pfizer products so I never felt a reason to quit, always felt if it isn't broke why fix it. I saw pictures of cows vaccinated about 10 years ago with ScourBos, pictures showed massive bruising of tissues, lumps that was done in testing. But I cannot confirm it, it was at a Pfizer dinner so take that for what it's worth. I wondered one time about switching to it, but I never felt my Pfizer product wasn't working so I never could jump ship. Bar none I would get on a program if calving in confined areas year after year.

Need to add I just don't see a scour problem now we are on it. Neighbor down the road feeds Bio Moss to his cows at home, but doesn't give scour shots, he claims that works for him.

Just my two cents.

So i talked to my vet and he said he recommended Scourgaurd 4kc instead of Scourbos9 because scourbos 9 leaves a big bump at injection location anyone see this? Scourbos 9 is cheaper... chrisws89

Thanks Russ, my vet did say Scourbos 9 left lots of bumps and bruising so he recomended Scourgaurd 4kc. I calve on pasture but this farm has had cattle for a long time and previous owner bought a lot of sale barn cattle. I never had scour problems until we moved the cattle to the new farm... JPT

Also depends on the history of the pasture and the cows in it. If no history of scours and cows in good condition probably won't need it. I had one pasture that I would always calve my 1st calf heifers in and it got to where at about 3 weeks of age I would have to doctor EVERY calf and it would set them back quite a bit (not the kind of scours you could ignore). Scour vaccination and some management changes took care of it. Another thing if you can start feeding your cows in a fresh part of the pasture when calves start hitting the ground helps immensely vs. Calving in a cesspool. BradyV

Been using Scour vaccines every year for 25 years now. First calf heifers get 2 rounds and cows just get annual shot. Gave ScourBos 9 last weekend for cows that start calving mid March. Used ScourGuard 3 K/C for many years because it was the only one available. Then switched to Scourbos 9 for a while. When Guardian came out switched to it for about 3 years but went back to Scourbos 9 because it is the cheapest. If something new were to come out I would likely switch with the thought it might have newer strains. It is cheap insurance and I will continue to use it. I also like giving a shot of Amplimune (formerly called Immunoboost) when one day old. Jordan3215

At day one we catch them, tag them, iodine the navel, band the bulls, and give the 1 ml of amplimune in the neck but not necessarily in the vein. 3 M L & C

Scourbos 9 will leave the biggest lump of any vaccine you give. But in my experience works way better than guardian. I would say to see what works best local. For some reason cydectin doesn't work worth a dang in our area. Not sure if scour guard products work better in some areas or not. wayneNWAR
